UCU is the largest trade union and professional association for academics, lecturers, trainers, researchers and academic-related staff working in further and higher education throughout the UK.
UCU was formed in 2006 by the merger of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) and National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education (NATFHE). It represents over 130,000 people involved in Further and Higher Education in the UK.
In Glasgow we represent academic or academic-related posts at grade 6 or above, research posts at grade 6 and above, and postgraduate students employed by the University of Glasgow, e.g. as GTAs. Our membership includes postdocs, lecturers to professors, senior administrators and other University Services posts amongst other roles. You don’t need to be on a permanent contract to join. UCU Glasgow offers advice and support to individuals and is able to provide Union representatives at disciplinary hearings and similar meetings. UCU is represented on the University’s Partnership Working Group and negotiates with the University on behalf of our members.
Nationally, UCU negotiates pay with the University and College Employers Association (UCEA), working together with other eduction unions (EIS in Scotland, GMB, Unite and UNISON). The University of Glasgow is part of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), and UCU negotiates on pensions.
UCU Glasgow is part of UCU Scotland, which represents UCU branches across Scotland.
UCU is affiliated to the TUC, UCU Scotland is affiliated to the STUC, and locally we are part of the Glasgow Trades Council. UCU is not affiliated to any political party.
