Remit:
The UCU Glasgow Equality Subcommittee will work to ensure all members of staff at the University of Glasgow are treated equally and with dignity and respect, through lobbying, campaigning, and negotiating with our employer University of Glasgow, and through education, training and outreach activities.
The Subcommittee will work closely with the LGBTQ+ and Migrant Members Subcommittees, the Sexual Harassment Working Group, and any other equalities-related UCUG representatives, groups and subcommittees. It will also work across UCUG, wider UCU structures, other trade union groups (such as the JULC Equalities Forum), and the University to ensure equalities issues are on the agenda for all important discussions and actions.
The Subcommittee is particularly committed to ensuring the accessibility of all of its activities, in line with disability rights and inclusion.
The Subcommittee will:
- Address all forms of inequality and discrimination with the University, HE and wider society, including issues faced by people around their gender, race, ethnicity, migrant status, sexuality, gender identity, disability, health status, age, social class, religion, etc.
- Provide a voice for staff equalities concerns on the UCUG Branch Committee, and, through the Branch, to UCU Scotland and UCU UK.
- Promote diversity and representation and challenge inequalities and discrimination within the UCUG Branch.
- Take on actions as requested by the Branch in the equalities space.
- Support and engage with the JULC Equalities Forum at the University.
- Offer support and advice to UofG staff on equalities problems in their workplace, and to case workers from the Branch dealing with those issues.
- Promote and signpost equalities training opportunities to UCUG members.
- Promote better training for staff in general, particularly line managers and decision-makers, on equalities issues.
- Encourage members to engage with equalities bodies within our trade union and the wider trade union movement, and to attend equalities conferences and events.
- Always make decisions and prioritise activities with the well-being of Subcommittee members and others involved to the fore-front.
